MP Jane Ellison has been appointed as a minister at the Department of Health following a Government reshuffle.

The Battersea MP takes over from Anna Soubry, who was promoted to Minister of State at the Ministry of Defence.

Ms Ellison said: "I feel incredibly honoured to have been appointed Minister for Public Health.

"This is an important area of policy which affects everyone’s lives to some degree - including, of course, those of my constituents.

"I will continue to work hard for the people of Battersea, both as their local MP and now as a Minister."

The announcement was made by Prime Minister David Cameron's office yesterday.

Ms Ellison's new responsibilities include preventing avoidable mortality, working with Public Health England and health finance.

She is the second Battersea MP to be appointed as a Minister for the Department of Health, following in the footsteps of John Bowis, who was MP between 1987 and 1997.

Ms Ellison set up the All-Party Parliamentary Group of Female Genital Mutilation and is co-chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Retail Group.

Before being elected in 2010, beating Labour incumbent Martin Linton, Ms Ellison worked for the John Lewis Partnership.

  • Putney MP, Justine Greening (Conservative), remains in David Cameron's cabinet as Secretary of State for International Development.
