A factory used for growing 200 cannabis plants was raided by police yesterday.

Acting on local intelligence, police officers attended a flat in Ewell High Street at 11am on October 10 where the plants were found inside.

Light and ventilation systems were in place in the three rooms where the plants were being grown.

An investigation also led to another property being used as a cannabis factory with more than 400 plants in Purley, Croydon.

Epsom’s neighbourhood inspector Craig Knight said: "This investigation has led to a significant discovery of cannabis plants which will disrupt the supply of this illegal drug both in our local neighbourhoods and wider afield.

"Many of our drugs warrants take place at rental properties and in some cases, thousands of pounds worth of damage is caused due to the installation of equipment used to cultivate and store drugs.

"The first that the landlord hears of it is when we call, by which time they are left facing a huge bill and a property in appalling condition.

“I urge all landlords to carry out regular inspections of their properties and do not hesitate to contact Surrey Police if you suspect that any illegal activity is taking place.”

A Surrey Police spokesman said that there are a number of things the public and landlords can look out for if they suspect that cannabis is being cultivated at an address:

• Do you let a house or flat and the locks have been changed?

• Is there a strange herbal smell in the air all the time?

• Are any shared walls hot to the touch?

• Do you know a house where the windows are always closed and the curtains drawn no matter what the weather?

• Are there extractor fans or air conditioning units on external walls that have recently been installed?

If you suspect a premises is being used for cultivation of cannabis or you know of any other drugs activity you should call the police on 101 or Crimestopper on 0800 555 111.
