Croydon Council successfully implemented its first gating order this week - giving them the power to shut off public highways where there are problems with crime and antisocial behaviour.
The first order was made for the Parkfields Estate in Shirley and follows a year of problems.
The order does not permanently close public rights of way as it can be revoked, but it enables the council to close off a particular area.
At a meeting of the council's cabinet committee leader of the council, Mike Fisher, said: "This gating order had overwhelming support from local residents. It is a drastic piece of action to be taken but I think it is well worth taking."
