I am writing in response to Mr Fitzgerald's letter about traffic calming in New Malden. I disagree with his view that the humps in Park View be removed because they cause distress to people travelling to hospital in an ambulance.
I have lived in Park View for 13 years, and for the first eight years or so before the humps were put in place, the road was a very real danger to any pedestrians using it to go to the park.
As soon as car drivers rounded the corner and entered Park View and could see the lovely clear, straight road ahead, they increased their speed to about 40mph and didn't slow down again until reaching the end.
As far as patients in ambulances go, they have my sympathy, but frankly, I think it's more important that we prevent people needing an ambulance in the first place after being hit by a speeding car.
