Ben Butler has been released on bail tonight pending further investigation into the unexplained death of his six-year-old daughter Ellie who died of a head injury.

Mr Butler, 33, a former removal man, was arrested on Monday after Ellie collapsed at home and was pronounced dead in hospital at 4pm.

Last night police were granted an extension on their arrest warrant so they could continue questioning Mr Butler up until about 11pm tonight.

Mr Butler has been bailed until a date in early November, pending further investigation.

A post-mortem examination took place today at St Thomas's Hospital and gave the cause of Ellie’s death as a head injury.

Enquiries continue to try to establish the circumstances of her death.

A police spokesman said: “Detectives investigating the unexplained death of a six-year-old girl have tonight, 31 October, released a man on bail.

“The man, 33, who was arrested on 28 October, has been bailed until a date in early November, pending further investigation.

“A post-mortem examination took place today at St Thomas's Hospital and gave cause of death as a head injury.

“Enquiries continue to try to establish the circumstances of the girl's death.

“Police were called by London Ambulance Service shortly after 3.35pm on Monday, 28 October, regarding a girl found collapsed at an address in Sutton.

“She was taken to a south London hospital where she pronounced dead at 4.01pm. Next of kin are aware.

“Officers from the Homicide and Major Crime Command are investigating.”
