A conscientious postman who found a birthday present in the street is trying to reunite it with its owner.

While out on his rounds last week, Simon Hithersay, a postman of 22 years, spotted an envelope made out of birthday wrapping paper.

After knocking on several doors in the Merton Park area of the borough, the 46-year-old decided to look inside the envelope to see if there were any clues as to the owner.

He said: "When I opened it, there was another envelope inside which just said "To Ashley, love from nanny and granddad", and that was it.

"There was a sum of money in there and a clipping from an Argos catalogue.

"As a dad myself, it's awful to think someone has not got their present from their grandparents. "I just want to find them so they can have it."
