A man wanted by police in connection after a serious assault in 2007 has been arrested in Amsterdam.

The 52-year-old suspect was wanted after the victim was assaulted and stabbed in London Road, West Croydon, on December 29, 2007.

Officers identified a suspect but learned he had left the UK shortly after the offence took place.

Through work carried out by Croydon police's Wanted Offender Unit, they discovered the man had possibly moved to Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

After contacting Dutch police earlier this year the man was eventually located and arrested on a European Arrest Warrant on Sunday, November 3.

He now awaits extradition back to the UK and remains in police custody in the Netherlands.

Detective Sergeant Steve George from Croydon's Wanted Offenders Unit said: "This case demonstrates that police will be relentless in their pursuit of those involved in violent crime, and running to another country will not serve as protection.

"It is a great example of cooperation between police forces within Europe and shows we have the means to bring people to justice, wherever they may be and no matter how long it takes to track them down."
