Servicemen and women gathered to remember their comrades.
Residents, scouts, and veterans took part in four remembrance services across Kingston upon Thames yesterday, and fell silent at 11am.
A standard is lowered after the playing of the Last Post.
At St Mary’s Church in Chessington, Rev Scott Edwards said in his sermon: “Today is an act of remembrance, not one of glorification.
“The mood was far from jingoistic.
“We gather so that we don’t take peace for granted."
Councillor Shiraz Mirza lays a wreath, on behalf of the Mayor, at the war memorial at Chessington's Royal British Legion branch.
Rev Edwards added: “Peace is a fragile thing.
“Let us remember the courage of so many. The cost to so many.”
Next year will mark 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War.
