Sutton fell silent at 11am today in honour of those who fought and died for their country.

Today is Armistice Day which marks the ceasefire agreed between the allies of World War I and Germany at 11 o’clock in the morning of November 11, 1918.

This year it came a day after Remembrance Sunday which honours members of the armed forces who died in the line of duty.

Yesterday the mayor of Sutton, Sean Brennan, laid a wreath at the war memorial outside Cheam library, in Malden Road, and today he laid one at the memorial in Trinity Square, Sutton, at 11am.

On Saturday two Sutton school pupils travelled to Brussels to take part in a Last Post Ceremony under the Menin Gate in Ypres today.

Jack Taperell, from Wilson’s School, and Olivia Snowden, from St Philomena’s, were part of a group of over 60 children from across the UK who went to collect soil from Flanders as part of the Flanders Fields Memorial Garden project.
