A rector facing an allegation of misconduct has stepped back from his role at churches with a large following in Ashtead.

The allegation against Reverend Bob Kiteley, rector at St Giles’ and St George’s, is being investigated by the Bishop of Guildford, Right Reverend Christopher Hill.

The church leadership team, including Associate Rector Simon Butler, are standing in for Rev Kiteley, serving the church community with nine congregations and 750 members.

A diocese spokeswoman said they were supporting the churches but could not give any indication as to the nature of the alleged misconduct or timescale of the investigation which is believed to have started last month.

She said: "We will be supporting them as much as we can. It is for the bishop to consider the evidence brought before him."

Grounds of misconduct can range from breach of ecclesiastical law or failure to do something it requires to neglect of duties or conduct that is be "unbecoming or inappropriate" to the office.

Rev Kiteley moved to Ashtead to become rector in 1999 after serving in two parishes in Chester. He is said to have been called by God to give up his career in geology and enter the clergy in 1978.

Diocesan spokesman Nick Edmonds said "We can confirm that the Revd Bob Kiteley has voluntarily stepped back from all duties following an allegation of misconduct.

"The Bishop of Guildford is now considering the complaint under the Clergy Discipline Measure and will be following the statutory procedures.

"In the meantime, while it is not possible to give any more information, the diocese is providing support to the parish and our thoughts and prayers are will all those involved."

The bishop will decide whether to take no further action, refer the complaint to a conciliator, impose a disciplinary penalty with the consent of the respondent or require the complaint to be formally investigated.

Alternatively the bishop can record the complaint conditionally for up to five years, which means that if another complaint is made during that period then both may be dealt with together.

Anyone with any concerns can contact Diocesan secretary Stephen Marriott on 01483 790355.
