Redevelopment of the town centre should propel it into the country’s top ten retails and leisure destinations according to one of the brains behind the scheme.

Westfield and Hammerson’s joint proposals for the £1.5 billion regeneration of central Croydon go before the planning committee on November 25.

Robin Dobson, Hammerson’s director of retail development, said the town can be a destination of choice for shoppers.

Hammerson bough the Centrale shopping centre in 2009 and formed the Croydon Partnership with Westfield earlier this year.

Speaking at the Develop Croydon Conference Mr Dobson said: “Croydon ranks about 29 or 30 in the retail index and we feel it should be within the top 10 of retail and leisure destinations.

“Ourselves and Westield see here a fantastic opportunity firstly in retail and leisure but also the catalyst that will create across the town. The footfall in North End is equivalent to that of Regent Street so it is in incredibly untapped reserve.”
