A drug dealer who was caught after police smelt cannabis fumes pouring from his van is likely to face jail.

Police stopped Tadworth man Dean Welch as he drove his van in Ross Parade, Wallington, on October 10.

Officers smelt cannabis coming from the vehicle and found he had two large bags of the herbal drug hidden in his boxer shorts.

A search of his home revealed a Tesco carrier bag full of cannabis, a further medium-sized bag of the drug, a stash of cash in an envelope and a set of scales.

Welch, 26, appeared in front of Croydon magistrates yesterday and prosecutor Sam Main told the court Welch admitted selling cannabis to his friends.

But Ola Yusuf, defending, explained he was driven to sell drugs by addictions to ketamine and cocaine.

The magistrates, who can give a maximum sentence of six months in prison for a single offence or a fine of up to £5,000, decided they do not have sufficient powers to sentence Welch and his case has been referred to Croydon Crown Court at a date yet to be set.
