Labour leader Ed Miliband launched his plans to extend free childcare to parents who face rising fees and fewer places during a visit to a Battersea nursery.

The leader of the opposition party visited Leading Ladders Nursery, in Francis Chichester Way, and said big banks should stump up the costs to help parents.

Under the scheme Labour would offer free childcare from 8am to 6pm in every primary school.

The scheme would make the big banks pay, saving about £1,500 a year for families.

He said the closure of Sure Start centres, which help disadvantaged youngsters, has added to the struggle of finding childcare places.

During the visit on Monday Mr Miliband said the party is focusing their attention on snatching Wandsworth from the Conservatives.

He said: "We are fighting for every vote in this area. We are already looking forward to fighting this vote.

"The cost of living in this area, energy prices, the cost of childcare - for us those are the issues lots of people care about.

"We will try and do as well as we can, people want to hear it from Labour."

Will Martindale, Labour's parliamentary candidate for Battersea, said the party is working hard to win votes in Wandsworth.

It comes after Mr Miliband recently gave a speech in Battersea Power Station, while deputy leader Harriet Harman paid a visit to Lavender Hill, Battersea, last weekend to campaign on energy bills.

The local elections will take place on May 22 next year.
