The number of people claiming Jobseeker’s benefits in Merton fell by nearly 20 per cent in the last year.

The figures, released by the House of Commons Library, show that since October 2012 the number of people seeking Jobseeker’s Allowance in Wimbledon fell by 17.5 per cent and in Mitcham and Morden, by 17.7 percent.

Nationally the number fell by 266,500 - a 16.9 per cent drop.

Stephen Hammond, MP for Wimbledon, welcomed the figures and said it was a sign the economy was recovering.

He said: "Since this Government was formed in May 2010, the private sector has created more than 1.4 million private sector jobs, with the fastest rate of job creation in 20 years and more people in work than ever before.

"It is great to see so many more local people getting jobs.

"It is unfortunate that Labour have failed to get behind the Government’s plans to drive forward economic growth.

"Despite constant criticism from the opposition, this Government has been committed to providing the framework that will support aspiration and allow Britain to succeed."
