There will be 5,220 additional primary school places and 500 extra primary and secondary places for special educational needs students by September 2015, the council has announced.

Croydon Council's school building programme has been awarded £110m from central government to help the estimated £170m costs, which will enable the council to meet the rapidly-growing demand from its expanding population.

Over the next two years new schools are proposed for sites in Haling Road, London Road, Highbury Avenue, the former general hospital site in Broad Green, and Westways resource centre on St James' Road.

This is in addition to proposals at Segas House in Katharine Street and South Norwood sports arena.

Permanent expansions are planned at ARK Oval, West Thornton and St Joseph's primary schools and about 10 extra temporary classes are expected to be in place for next September.

Councillor Tim Pollard, cabinet member for children, families and learning, said: "This year every parent who applied on time for a place for their child received an offer of a suitable school.

"We are committed to making sure that regardless of how many applications we receive we maintain this achievement.

"Croydon’s educational standards are improving at a time when national results are in decline, showing that our twin focus on standards and places available is continuing to pay off."
