One of the borough's busiest roads is to receive £45m of investment in a bid to get traffic flowing.

Croydon Council and Transport for London (TfL) plan to transform the A23 corridor, a key access route which cuts through the borough from Coulsdon to Norbury.

They believe the investment package, made up of £20m of council money and £25m from TfL's growth fund, could help bring business into Croydon by smoothing access to the town.

The precise details of the plan are yet to be finalised. A feasibility study is to be conducted to investigate options.

Councillor Jason Perry, cabinet member for planning, regeneration and transport, said: "Croydon has enormous potential for growth and development, and, in order to see our plans for thousands of new homes, jobs and business opportunities realised, it is paramount that we support them by investing in public realm and infrastructure improvements."

Michele Dix, managing director for planning at TfL, said: "This is great news for Croydon and for London as a whole.

"It shows how TfL, working in partnership with London's boroughs and developers, is using the Mayor's Growth Fund and transport investment to support jobs, new homes and improvements to town centres and the environment for local people."

TfL will invest an additional £10m on improvements further on other parts of the A23, which extends to Brighton in the south and Waterloo to the north.
