A man escaped through the clutches of Sainsbury’s staff but a woman was arrested by police.

Staff had tried to detain the man who made off before police arrived at the store in Leatherhead High Street in response to an incident at about 5.15pm on November 15.

On arrival police arrested the 23-year-old woman, from London, on suspicion of false representation under the Fraud Act 2006.

She had allegedly claimed that staff had given her two fake £20 notes.

Mole Valley Neighbourhood Sergeant John Pearson said: "The woman was arrested when police arrived. The woman was compliant and not a problem to the staff."

She remains on police bail until December 27.
