A long-term member of a church congregation has added her voice to a call for rolls of honour to be put on display.

St Barnabas, in Temple Road, Epsom, is under mounting pressure to bring back ornamental scrolls inscribed with the names of war dead.

A local historian and soldier’s relative have already spoken out after discovering the scrolls had been deposited at the Surrey History Centre in Woking where they remain unseen in the vaults.

Mary Wood, 75, who has worshipped at the church for more than 25 years, said: "I think it’s something to be proud of. It’s memory. We still relate to them and thank them for their sacrifices."

She said that the church had been renovated over the years and some of its former decorations had gone. She said: "It has its charm but it is quite blank."

Epsom MP Chris Grayling said if there are rolls of honour gathering dust in an archive then a way should be found to put them on display.

Mr Grayling said: "I’m very keen that we do everything we can locally to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War and to make sure all the memorials in the area are in good condition.

"I’m keen to hear of any that need renovation." Mr Grayling hopes to get his local team involved in identifying, restoring and cleaning up any overgrown or neglected local war memorials.

Do you know of any memorials in need of renovation?
