Firefighters broke into a prison cell to tackle a blaze on Saturday evening.
Epsom firefighters were called to a fire in men’s prison High Down in Sutton Lane near Banstead at 7.45pm on Saturday.
An Epsom fire station spokesman said they used equipment, including a crowbar, to break into the cell and a hose reel to put out the flames.
He said: “It’s normally the prisoners who are being a bit disruptive. It’s normally with bedding.
"It’s against their human rights to take lighters away. They can smoke out of their windows.”
