A man who was bottled in the neck was saved by passersby and police officers following a serious assault in Mitcham on Friday.

Police were called to reports of a fight in Upper Green East in Mitcham on Friday, November 22 at about 10pm.

A 34-year-old man was found with cuts to his neck and face after being stabbed in the neck with a bottle.

Luckily he was helped by passersby, one of whom removed their jumper and used it as a temporary bandage to stem the flow of the bleeding.

Detective Chief Superintendent Darren Williams, Merton police Borough Commander, said: "A man was bottled in the neck and it looked initially as if it would become a murder.

"What I witnessed over the next few hours reinforced how privileged I am to be the Borough Commander here at Merton.

"The teamwork, leadership, quick-thinking and resilience shown by every officer involved was exemplary.

"Not only this, but the injured man's life was saved by the actions of the officers and two members of the public who gave him first aid."

The man was taken to hospital where he was treated for a stab wound to his neck, later described as non-life threatening and has since been released.

It is believed the attack was carried out by four black males.

Enquiries are ongoing and there have been no arrests.
