The unveiling of the council's new headquarters was described as a "major milestone in the history of Croydon" after being officially opened.

Mayor of Croydon councillor Yvette Hopley was joined by Lady Weatherill, wife of the late Bernard, at the opening of Bernard Weatherill House last Tuesday, where a plaque was unveiled to mark the opening of a community space at the building.

A total of 75 council services, as well as partners from Croydon Clinical Commissioning Group, Jobcentre Plus, Croydon Credit Union and Citizens Advice Bureau, moved into the new building in September and October.

Among guests were Richard Taberner and Anna Thomas, the grandchildren of Ernest Taberner, after whom the council's former home is named.

In what symbolised as the passing of the baton of history, Lady Weatherill and the Mayor presented them with an old right of way notice with their grandfather’s name engraved on it.

School-children from St Peter’s Primary School in South Croydon gave a presentation called "Buildings of the future."

Guests were given a tour of BWH followed by a visit to the rest of the civic centre facilities – the Town Hall, Braithwaite Hall and community auditorium.

Councillor Mike Fisher, leader of the council, said: "This event was a major milestone in the history of Croydon.

"It was about respecting the past while looking to the future, and we are extremely grateful that both Lady Weatherill and the grandchildren of Ernest Taberner were able to attend."
