A highlight in Sutton’s Christmas calendar is returning – to the delight of thousands of children.

Cheam Rotary’s Santa float hit the headlines last year when health and safety concerns led to Santa being banned from standing on top of the moving float.

But the festive tradition is back and will tour the streets of Cheam and its fringes bringing Christmas greetings to all in the evenings from Sunday, December 1.

Last year the float, which has been running for 48 years, raised £10,700 for local charities.

Cheam Rotary president Marcel Markan said: "Santa’s sleigh brings great joy to young and old alike and we love to share the festive experience with the local community.  What’s more the money raised is so valuable to the 12 local charities that take part."

Three of the members of the original team, who are all in their eighties, will be out collecting again this year – 48 years on.
