A medley of music acts will be bringing everything from soul and funk to Middle Eastern sounds, hip hop and jazz to an up-and-coming community cafe and bar.

Native Tongue, which started as a collective of musicians and street performers in 1999, has signed up a number of artists to run regular music nights starting this month.

Tristan Maguire, head of bookings, says: "It is exciting but also a bit nerve-racking. We have got Middle Eastern world music, funk and soul music, live jazz and a couple of blues sessions coming up."

Among the musicians are homegrown band Bulletproof Bomb, who have recorded their debut EP and recently played at the House of Fun Weekender, and songwriter Latala who draws on her Lebanese heritage for Arabic-influenced sounds and melodies.

Ruby Egau and Danny Vice, a Brighton duo known as Frank Greene, hope to showcase the "truest, most genuine and downright sexiest" funk and soul from the South.

Egau says: "Native Tongue's soul night is our baby and we're really excited about making this a real hotspot for emerging soul and funk artists and music lovers alike.

"We live and breathe this music so it only seemed natural to take it one step further and run a night in which we can perform and showcase artists in the area."

The singers, who run Are-d-r Productions, will perform on their first night along with funk and soul band Little Triggers.

Another bi-monthly soul night will feature New Zealand soul band Very Tall Stories along with other London, Kiwi and Australian bands.

Epsom’s Realistic Music Academy and North East Surrey College Of Technology (NESCOT) have also signed up for monthly nights.

Native Tongue is also currently preparing for the opening of a new flagship venue in London's Soho.
