Plans that will dramatically change the shape of the town centre are set to be given the green light tomorrow night.
Sutton Council is likely to approve plans to demolish the gas holders and dilapidated tower block at the northern end of Sutton High Street near the junction with Crown Road.
The plan is to replace it with a Sainsbury's supermarket, a modern block of flats and a public square.
The council's planning experts have recommended councillors on the development control committee approve the development despite opposition from rival supermarket Morrison's.
The plans are for 186 flats, the new supermarket, which would face Crown Road, a public square and a redevelopment of the existing road network to make room for the potential addition of a tram stop should Sutton's plans to bring the Tramlink to the town centre be a success.
