Sutton Council nets almost £2m in parking profits over a year

The council made almost £2million from parking fees last year - although many other boroughs cash in more on motorists.

Sutton Council made £1.7m profit from parking - including from penalty charges, car parks, permits and on-street parking charges -  in 2012/13.

The figure puts it in the top 100 councils' in the country in terms of how much it made but leaves it a long way short of the most profitable areas - the top earner, Westminster, raked in more than £39m in profit from motorists.

Sutton Council's income from parking has risen steadily in the past three years, from £1.364million in 2009/10.

Neighbouring Croydon Council made £2.580million last year, an increase on the previous year's figure but a large drop compared to 2009/10 when it made a profit of more than £6million.

Overall, councils' parking profits across the country have increased by five per cent in the last year prompting criticism from motorists' group the RAC.

Professor Stephen Glaister, director of the RAC Foundation, said: "It is a case of déjà vu. Once again English councils have made record amounts from parking. Yet overall spending on local roads has fallen by 9% over the past three years with road safety expenditure down by as much as 20%.

"It might be that some of the extra ‘profit’ has arisen because councils’ costs for running parking services have been reduced but drivers need to know this.

"There’s no disputing the figures we have looked at. They are the numbers the councils themselves submit to central government.

"What’s more, council budgets show that the surplus for the current year is set to be higher still."

Parking fees are not and never were destined to go into paying for the roads. Roads are paid for out of general taxation, which for local authorities means a number of different sources - many of which have been hit by the economic downturn.

Spending on all local services has reduced as central Government funding has reduced by up to 7%, inflation is at around 3% and councils are asked to keep council tax from rising.

And how many of those fines were issued from the CCTV cars when they were also illegally parked on double yellow lines or blocking cycle paths?

If you illegally park then you deserve to be fined and given a ticket, but it works both ways.

Ah the mystery of the £2m "found" for repainting yellow lines and parking bays is solved! Not fiscal wisdom from our Council but penalties levied (often unfairly) on residents with cars!
