Neighbours in Wallington are facing Christmas in damp, smelly houses after being hit by flooding over the weekend.

People living around Stanley Park Road experienced flooding in their gardens and homes after heavy rain on Saturday.

One Stanley Park Road woman, who asked  not to be named, said: "There's a big drainage problem here. The water got into our house on Saturday and it smells dreadful.

"One of the engineers said between 20 and 50 homes have been affected - the drains are all just overflowing.

"Two of my carpets have been ruined and I've had to tie my curtains up to stop them being ruined as well. I'm worried about the conservatory because water was rushing between the base and the frame.

"It's horrible. I feel like we've been let down badly."

The fault was reported to Thames Water and tankers were sent to the area to unblock the drains.

A spokeswoman said: "A blockage was reported to us on Saturday and we sent a team along to clear the sewer.

"We have also arranged for a clean-up of the gardens to take place in the next 48 hours and will carry out further work in the sewer to prevent more flooding.

"We know that sewer flooding is a miserable experience so would like to say how sorry we are to the residents who’ve been affected by this."
