Last night's storm felled trees and caused flooding all over the area but Sutton appears to have escaped any major incident.

Firefighters had to evacuate one family from their home after a large tree fell against it in Carshalton Beeches and rainwater is thought to have damaged the wall of the Parochial Rooms in Cheam.

Firefighters described the night as "horrendous" and said at times the roads were so badly flooded they had trouble driving on them in their engines but it is believed no-one in the borough has been hurt by any incident connected with the storm.

Crews from both Wallington and Sutton said they were on the move almost constantly last night going from one incident to another. A spokesman for Wallington firefighters said: "It's been a horrendous night. We've been to so many places I can barely remember them all.

"Just about every low point is was flooded because the drains couldn't cope. When it gets to that stage it's hard because we can pump the water away but it just goes straight back to the lowest point as there's nowhere else for it to go.

"Sadly there's no magic wand to get rid of the water when it's like that and we have to wait for it to drain away, which is frustrating.

"The roads were terrible. The water was so deep in the lower points that it was hard to get the engine through."

Among the incidents Wallington attended was one where a large tree fell and landed against the side of a family home in Beeches Avenue at about midnight.

The spokesman added: "We had to evacuate the family because we just couldn't guarantee their safety due to the weight of the tree against their house.

"It was a family of six we had to evacuate - three generations of the same family. Luckily they had family nearby that they've gone to stay with."

The crew also went to Park Lane where a tree was balanced precariously only to see it fall, narrowly missing two houses at about 10.45pm.

Rainwater is believed to have damaged the wall of the Parochial Rooms in Cheam Village, causing part of it to fall down.

Sutton firefighters were mainly called out to jobs in Purley, where there was some severe flooding but said their patch was largely unscathed by the weather.

A spokesman for Sutton firefighters said: "It's been a busy night. There was general chaos but Sutton itself is on a bit of a hill so there hasn't been too much flooding."
