Youngsters who got new electronic devices like phones, MP3 players and hand-held games consoles for Christmas are being advised to be careful as they return to school.

Inspector Richard Hall of Sutton police said: "Unfortunately children can be targeted by criminals at this time of year if they are seen using the latest technology - items that are generally small, easy to conceal, desirable and can be easily sold on for a quick cash gain.

"Please be discreet when using such devices in the street because you don’t know who is watching."

Police suggest people should avoid using their phones immediately as they leave school, at bus stops or in train stations as thieves are known to operate in these areas and to make sure phones are only used briefly to avoid drawing attention to them. Valuable devices should be carried in front pockets or deep inside a fastened bag with the strap over your head.
