Chief Secretary to the treasury Danny Alexander paid a visit to Sutton to see some of the pioneering cancer research taking place in the borough.
Mr Alexander visited the Institute of Cancer Research and the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust on Tuesday evening to view their new state-of-the-art facilities and learn about their world-leading work in cancer research and treatment.
He was joined by Sutton’s MPs Paul Burstow and Tom Brake as well as the leader of Sutton Council Ruth Dombey.
Professor Alan Ashworth, chief executive of The Institute of Cancer Research, said: “Danny Alexander’s visit was an excellent opportunity to showcase our joint Sutton site, one of the local area’s biggest employers, and the benefits our work brings both for patients with cancer and the economy.”
Councillor Ruth Dombey said: “We are committed to supporting The Institute of Cancer Research and The Royal Marsden to develop their ambitions further so they continue to be one of our borough’s great success stories.”
Paul Burstow, MP for Sutton and Cheam, said: “[The ICR and The Royal Marsden] being in Belmont is a huge positive for the area and shows that Sutton is a place where important things happen on the international stage."
