Investigations have been carried out at care homes following 120 safeguarding alerts last year.

Members of the public and inspectors flagged up concerns about 71 care homes across Sutton.

A number of care homes and providers were investigated but the council would not reveal which ones or what the outcomes were.

Board papers from a Sutton Clinical Commissioning Group meeting reveal that the agencies concerned have met and taken actions following further investigation.

It is understood the number of alerts is not considered out of the ordinary.

The statutory responsibility for assuring the quality of care homes and care providers lies with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) who work closely with the council.

A spokesperson for Sutton Council said: "The CQC inspection regime for individual homes and care providers will detect issues relating to poor care and safety, as well as action required to improve standards.

"Sutton Council encourages service providers and members of public to report concerns about the treatment of vulnerable adults.

"This year a number of case reviews have been held in collaboration with partner organisations and the intention is that the reports will be published after March 2014. We are not able to provide review details in advance."
