Two robbers in balaclavas stole a large quantity of cigarettes from the back of a delivery van this morning.

The men entered the van while it was being unloaded at Sainsbury’s petrol station in Kiln Lane, Epsom, at about 7.40am.

The pair fled the scene in a white getaway van, possibly a Citroen with registration number YE03 ZZA.

Terrified delivery workers were not hurt and no weapons were seen during the robbery.

Detective Inspector Antony Archibald said: "I would appeal to anyone who saw this vehicle either prior the offence occurring or after it left the scene to share this information with us.

"It is possible the offender will now have dumped this vehicle somewhere and I would appeal to anyone who knows its whereabouts to contact us as a matter of urgency.

"This was a terrifying ordeal for the delivery workers and I would like to reassure them and the Epsom community that we will do all we can to find those responsible."

Detectives from East Surrey CID are making enquiries and working with officers from the Epsom Safer Neighbourhood Team.

There will be a high police presence in the area while a search for the vehicle and robbers takes place.

Deputy store manager Sarah Bird confirmed that police were dealing with the robbery and referred questions to the Sainsbury’s press office.

A Sainsbury's spokesman said: “We can confirm there was an incident at our Kiln Lane store this morning.

"No colleagues or customers were harmed and we are helping the police with their enquiries.”

Epsom and Ewell Neighbourhood Inspector Craig Knight said: "I would encourage people to come forward if they think they can assist.

"These types of incident are rare and if anyone thinks they saw anything suspicious in the Kiln Lane area at the time or before the incident this morning I would urge them to call us.

"I would also ask everyone to look out for the van with the index given and report any sightings immediately to police."

Anyone with information should call Surrey Police on 101 (999 in an emergency), quoting reference P14007724.
