Flood-hit communities along the Thames have been warned of further floods but properties by the River Mole look set to escape further damage.

Light rain is forecast for Friday evening in Leatherhead as flood victims continue to clean up in the wake of the worst flooding for decades.

A flood alert updated today said: "River levels in the Mole remain high at Downside Bridge [Cobham] where there may still be flooding in fields and on low lying land and roads.

"River catchments remain saturated and sensitive to any further rainfall. Maximum rainfall totals of up to 5mm are forecast in the next 48 hours and we do not anticipate this to cause any property flooding.

"We will continue to monitor the situation and will update this message if the situation changes."

The Environment Agency has warned that areas along the Thames, including Richmond, could experience flooding in coming days as rainwater from previous storms continues to swell the river.

At noon there were 50 flood warnings and 97 flood alerts in place for the South East.

Howard Davidson, Environment Agency director for the South East, said: "Whilst the risk of flooding remains across southern England, we’re paying close attention to the River Thames, particularly below Oxford, into Berkshire and through Surrey.

"River levels are high and will continue to rise for the next few days. It is likely that we will see further flooding to properties over the coming days.

"Environment Agency teams continue to work to work around the clock maintaining flood defences, clearing watercourses and deploying pumps and temporary defences to protect communities at risk."
