A well-known Sutton eyesore is set to get a facelift on both the inside and the outside.

As well as giveing the exterior of Chaucer House in Chaucer Road new cladding, residents will be receiving new kitchens, bathrooms, rewiring, communal heating and a sprinkler system.

Andrew Chalk, head of asset management at Sutton Housing Partnership (SHP), which runs the block on behalf of Sutton Council, said: "Health and safety within tower blocks is a priority for SHP and in the planning of this project we have worked closely with the London Fire Brigade to address any issues."

The work on the nine storey block will be carried out by housing and regeneration company Keepmoat.

An empty property has been converted into a show flat, where neighbours can check out the new designs and liaise with management of the renovation.

Keepmoat’s Stuart Moore said: "The pilot flat has been great because it has allowed residents to give us their feedback on the work and for us to make adjustments accordingly, for example, changing the location of meters to make it easier to fit in furniture.

“It will provide somewhere clean and calm for residents to go while work to their properties is carried out and we will also be providing a washing machine which we hope will come in useful for especially those with small children.”
