More than 205 potholes have been repaired in the last four months as the council bids to improve the borough's roads.

Sutton Council is now ranked 23rd out of 214 councils by cycling charity CTC after 88 per cent of potholes reported via FillThatHole.co.uk were fixed.

Almost 1,200 potholes have been repaired since April 2013 compared to just 701 between April 2012 and March 2013.

The 205 that have been repaired in the last four months came after 88 per cent of Sutton people surveyed by analysts Ipsos MORI identified the roads as a priority and ahead of the coming cold weather, which usually damages tarmac.

Councillor Jill Whitehead, chairwoman of the council's environment and neighbourhood committee, said: "Potholes are becoming more of a problem every year for motorists and cyclists and we are responding by dedicating more time to repairing them before they get any bigger.

"We are proud to say that in 2013 we fixed every single pot hole that was reported directly to the council, and the majority of pot holes reported through the FillThatHole.co.uk website.

"I encourage all residents to report any potholes they see either via the dedicated section of the website or by calling the council customer service line on 0208 770 5000."

Chris Peck of CTC said: "We are pleased to see that Sutton is responding to pothole reports logged on the FillThatHole.co.uk website, and dealing with many of them so promptly.

"We encourage all local authorities to also make every effort to address the growing pothole issue."
