A couple's baby was the first to be born at St Helier Hospital this year.

Sophie Maria Webb, was born at 2.37am on January 1, weighing 3.350 kg to parents Ewelina and Mark Webb of Wickham Avenue, Cheam.

She was one of six babies to be born at the hospital this year.

First time parents Rima and Suraj Shah, from Croydon, chose to have their baby at St Helier Hospital in Carshalton.

Their little baby girl, who does not yet have a name, was due on December 30.

However Baby Shah gave her parents the best start to the new year by arriving just after 6pm on New Year's Day weighing six pounds and 19 ounces.

Mum Rima Shah, 31, a financial advisor, said: "This is my first baby. We haven't got a name yet. We just haven't had a chance to sit down and decide on names. She's just known as 'Baby Shah'.
"We are just too exhausted to think about it at the moment.

"She's really good. She's doing really really well. She's a calm baby. It's a good start to the new year.

"On New Year's Eve we had a quiet one at home because my waters had broken on the 31st in the morning. So all of New Year's Eve I was at home. I couldn't really do anything i was just waiting for my contractions to start. They started late New Year's Eve. At 4am I went to the hospital on New Year's Eve.

"It could have made a massive difference if it was 2013 or 2014. We were hoping for a 2014 baby. I don't know why we were just hoping for 2014.

"I had to have an emergency c-section in the end. My family were amazing. My parents are from Wallington and I've always been to St Helier Hospital. We chose St Helier over May Day."

Nine babies were also born at the hospital over Christmas.
