Sutton and Cheam MP Paul Burstow is calling on residents to throw their support behind a Sutton post office which has been earmarked for closure.

The Post Office wants to shut the High Street branch in the St Nicholas Centre and merge it with the branch in Grove Road.

The company's St Nicholas Centre lease expires in June, when it plans to join the two services together.

A public consultation is now open outlining plans for a refurbishment of the Grove Road branch, which would include extended opening times and self-service kiosks.

But Mr Burstow said the move would be a 'slap in the face' for staff working at the High Street branch, as well as taking trade away from the town centre.

Mr Burstow said: "The Post Office believe that the High Street branch is not profitable enough to keep open, and want to move services to Grove Road instead.

“People will be surprised to hear that the High Street Post Office isn’t profitable.

"Anyone walking past can see the queues, and I’m not convinced that they can accommodate everyone at the Grove Road branch.

"It also takes much-needed trade away from our High Street and is a slap in the face to the staff of the St Nicholas Branch who work hard on behalf of everyone in Sutton.

“I’m also worried that the results of the consultations will be ignored like they were in Carshalton, and will be pushing the Post Office to let us know the results.”

Mr Burstow asked residents to respond to the consultation, which can be viewed here.

A petition has also been set up on the MP's website.
