An armed robber who mugged and threatened a taxi driver with a gun has been sentenced to five years behind bars.

Danny John Young, 25, of Gatley Avenue, in Epsom, appeared at Guildford Crown Court on Friday, January 17, for sentencing after pleading guilty to robbery and possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear in December.

The incident occurred at 11.20pm on Friday, February 22, when a taxi driver picked up passengers from Worcester Park and travelled to Stanton Close, in Epsom, where he was threatened with a firearm and mugged of his wallet and mobile phone.

The taxi driver, a man in his 30s, was left shaken but uninjured.

Young had been remanded in custody since he was charged in July.

He committed the offences with his brother, Lenny Lewis Young, 18, of Monument Way, Weybridge. 

Lenny Lewis Young also pleaded guilty to the same offences at Guildford Crown Court in December and will be sentenced on March 25.

Detective Constable Catherine Jenkin, of East Surrey CID, said: "This was a complex investigation which lasted several months but we were determined to bring those responsible for this awful offence to justice.

"The victim endured a terrifying ordeal at the hands of the Young brothers and no doubt this incident will stay with him for some time but I hope the sentence passed today will go some way to bring him closure.

"Incidents of this nature are rare in East Surrey but when they do occur they no doubt heighten the fear of crime among lone workers in our community.
