A leading doctor on kidney disease has been appointed as a non-executive director of Epsom and St Helier hospitals trust.

Dr Iain MacPhee is a senior clinical academic in renal medicine - kidney disease – at London’s St George’s hospital, and a consultant renal physician in St George’s Healthcare NHS Trust.

He began working at St George’s in 1997, having trained previously in Oxford and Glasgow.

Dr MacPhee, who lives in Cheam, is extensively involved in the education of medical undergraduates and is academic director for St George’s International medical degree programmes.

He has published his research on kidney transplantation widely and is currently the general secretary of the British Transplantation Society.

Acute kidney injury is a developing research interest of Dr MacPhee, with a programme of work that involves collaboration with the renal scientists in the South West Thames Institute for Renal Research based at St Helier Hospital.

On being appointed to his new role, Dr MacPhee said: "I am delighted to be taking on this role and look forward to contributing to the development of Epsom and St Helier hospitals in interesting and challenging times."

Laurence Newman, trust chairman, added: "We are delighted that Iain is now a non-executive director at Epsom and St Helier.

"It is clear that his passion lies in improving healthcare for patients, and his extensive experience as a highly respected clinician will be an absolute asset to our organisation.

"As non-executive directors, we represent the interests of the people and the communities surrounding our hospitals, and provide both support and challenge to the trust board.

"It is a role with a lot of responsibility, and we all welcome Iain to the post."

Dr MacPhee is married with three children and likes gardening, watching rugby and visiting vineyards.
