A cyclist sustained serious head and leg injuries in a crash with a white transit van this afternoon.

The cyclist, in his 40s, was taken to St George’s Hospital in Tooting after the crash at 2pm on an uphill section of the A24 Leatherhead Bypass.

Road closures were put in place in the immediate area, including at Givons Grove and Beaverbrook Roundabout.

The A24 Leatherhead Bypass reopened just before 4.50pm.

At about 3pm Surrey Roads Police tweeted: "A24 Leatherhead closed at Givons Grove roundabout due to serious collision."

The A246 Young Street was partially blocked due to the accident.

A South East Coast Ambulance Service spokesman said an air ambulance, an ambulance and two cars were sent to the scene.

He said: “The patient has been taken to St George’s Hospital by road as a priority.”
