A singer-song writer is hoping to put a country folk twist on Valentines Day this year, writes Andy Bloss.

Nashville-born and New York City-based singer Laura Cantrell is releasing her new album in February before embarking on a UK tour.

Her latest album, No Way There From Here features eleven new songs and was recorded in her home town of Nashville.

Since 2000 Cantrell has released albums such as Not The Tremblin Kind and Humming By The Flowered Vine and also featured on the Peel sessions on BBC Radio One.

Cantrells career path has also seen her having spells as a radio DJ and a contributor to the New York Times and Vanity Fair.

When the singer comes to Croydon there will be more than music in the air as she performs at Fairfield Halls on Valentines Day.

The gig is taking place in the Arnhem Gallery with tickets selling well for the event.

Cantrell says she is looking forward to playing in Croydon, the first time she has visited the town.

She says: "I wrote 11 of the 12 songs on the album. I have a seven year old daughter and the songs that started coming when she was a little one were different, inspired by different times of my life and people I have observed.

"Playing country and country inspired music in the town of my birth was a great thrill.

"I haven’t been to Croydon before. I love coming to England and seeing new places so I am looking forward to that.

"I'm a big fan of the Everly Brothers and was gutted by the recent news that Phil Everly died. So I've been thinking about some of their sad love songs like I Wonder If I'll Care As Much or So Sad To Watch Good Love Go Bad to perform.

"I think there are is a wide range of emotions in the songs on the new album but definitely love in its various stages is central."
