Rising river levels, heavy rain overnight and bad weather forecasts have sparked fears that Leatherhead could flood again.

A Met Office warning has called on people in Surrey and other parts of the South East to be prepared for gales today.

Rain is forecast for today, tomorrow, Friday and Saturday in Leatherhead.

A flood alert issued by the Environment Agency said: "River levels on the River Mole are rising in response to 16mm of rainfall overnight. Flooding of low-lying land and roads is expected in some locations.

"We are currently expecting a further 5 to 10mm of rainfall through Wednesday which is likely to maintain high river levels through into Thursday afternoon.

"At least two more weather fronts are bringing more significant rainfall on Thursday and over the weekend."

An amber Met Office warning, which is valid until 3pm today, said: "Winds are expected to gust to around 70 mph over coasts, and 50-60 mph inland, whilst rain will be heavy at times.

"The public should be prepared for the risk of disruption to transport and power due to fallen trees."

A yellow wind warning, which advises people to be aware of the threat, will remain in place until 10pm. Another yellow rain warning is scheduled between 5pm on Thursday and 8am on Friday.

It said: "A further spell of heavy and persistent rain now seems much more likely to affect much of southern England and parts of south Wales later on Thursday evening and during the first part of Friday."
