Water was seen spurting out as high as houses after a water main burst in Carshalton this morning.
Firefighters were called to monitor the situation in Green Wrythe Lane at about 3.30am.
They did not have to pump water out of any homes and monitored the situation until the main was turned off by Sutton and East Surrey Water.
The crew from Mitcham fire station was there for about two hours.
A spokeswoman for the water company said: "We are repairing it at the moment and there may be an interruption to supply which will affect a few houses."
