The figures, compiled by the Environment Agency, have been released as the London Assembly calls on Mayor Boris Johnson to spend more money on the capital's flood defences following recent heavy rains that have caused chaos across the city.

Murad Qureshi, chairman of the London Assembly's environment committee, said: ""The figures we have obtained from the Environment Agency show far too many homes in London remain at high flood risk.

"The Prime Minister has said that money is no object, so it’s time for the Mayor to cash in that promise and secure the funding necessary to protect those London homes.

"Current flood defence proposals will only protect a fraction of the homes at high risk."

The figures show 148 homes in Sutton are at high risk, 950 are at medium risk, 1,233 are at low risk and 13 are at very low risk.

The statistics have been released at the area braces itself for a severe storm tomorrow. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for both rain and wind meaning people should be prepared for adverse conditions.
