A multi-million pound redevelopment in Sutton town centre will go ahead after getting backing from Boris Johnson and the Government.

Sutton Council approved plans for a large-scale revamp of the gas holder site at the north end of Sutton High Street in December .

But the plans are so big they require approval from the Greater London Authority, headed by London Mayor Boris Johnson, and the National Planning Casework Unit.

Your Local Guardian:

The scheme aims to rejuvenate the northern part of the town centre

Both organisations have given their backing to the plan and it has now been given the formal go-ahead.

Developer LXB Retail Properties plans to build four separate blocks comprising 186 flats above nine shops including a giant new Sainsbury's supermarket.

It will involve the decommissioning of the disused gas holder site and the demolition of buildings, including the Zurich tower, on the site.

The new development will also feature a public square with water features, trees and seating.

Giles Haywood, Development Surveyor from the developer LXB, said: "We are delighted there has been so much support for our plans and that they are now approved.

"The scheme will represent a £50m inward investment into Sutton town centre and will create a fantastic new place for people to meet, live, work and shop.

"The intention is to start demolition and initial site preparation works this spring with completion in early 2016."

Councillor Jayne McCoy added: "This redevelopment scheme will lead to the regeneration of the northern part of the Town Centre and the surrounding area.

"The land will have multiple uses, so it will not only create employment opportunities, but it will provide high quality housing and attract new businesses to Sutton.

"We will work with partners to ensure that the project is successful, and we are committed to ensuring that local residents are consulted and involved at every step."
