Mr Roberts had particular praise for twork to restore Leatherhead fire station, which was flooded over Christmas.

He said: "There were six or seven inches of water all across the ground floor.  But we were able to get back into the fire station much more quickly than we had expected.

"We had predicted six weeks, but were back in three."

Accepting the shield, Coun Sharland, paid tribute to those affected by flooding in the district and said it had been a privilege to be able to help the fire service.
