A rector has been asked to resign after a church investigation into his misconduct.

Reverend Bob Kiteley has resigned as rector at St Giles’ and St George’s, a church community with about 750 members in Ashtead.

The Bishop of Dorking, who has care of the diocese at present, asked Dr Kiteley to resign after concluding that an allegation against him was justified.

Dr Kiteley, 62, accepted the complaint had validity and agreed to resign from the parish where he has been rector since 1999.

He has indicated that he will seek early medical retirement from the Church of England.

A Diocese of Guildford spokesman said he could not reveal the nature of the complaint citing church rules called the Clergy Discipline Measure.

But he said: "There is no criminal investigation. The reasons for the confidentiality are manifold, it is to do with protecting the people involved."

Grounds of misconduct can range from breach of ecclesiastical law or failure to do something it requires to neglect of duties or conduct that is be "unbecoming or inappropriate" to the office.

Diocesan secretary Stephen Marriott said: "We acknowledge Bob’s contribution to the life of the parish and wider church during his 15 years as rector.

"This has been a difficult time for all concerned but the churchwardens and other clergy have done a terrific job in sustaining the worship and ministry of this dynamic and busy parish and we will continue to support them as they move forward."

Dr Kiteley moved to Ashtead to become rector in 1999 after serving in two parishes in Chester. He is said to have been called by God to give up his career in geology and enter the clergy in 1978.

He has been asked to comment but has not yet responded.

The Bishop of Dorking, the Right Reverend Ian Brackley, is currently leading the Diocese of Guildford following the retirement of the Right Reverend Christopher Hill in November.
