A getaway car got stuck in the mud as burglars fled the scene after a raid on a disability charity in Leatherhead.

Two men have been arrested in connection with the botched burglary of gardening tools from the Queen Elizabeth’s Foundation for Disabled People (QEF) on the morning of February 17.

The Mitsubishi Shogun, which had reportedly been stolen elsewhere, was found marooned in the mud and gardening equipment, including hedge trimmers, had gone.

A spokesman QEF said staff spotted a four-by-four car stranded in a muddy cricket pitch by their car park when they came into work on Monday morning.

He said: "It got totally stuck. They stole an amount of gardening equipment including strimmers that they dropped in their rush to escape and get away."

The spokesman, who said it was a stolen car, added: "It is disappointing that we should be targeted as a charity for theft in such a way. We look forward to tighter security so it does not happen again."

A man in his 30s and a man in his 50s were arrested on suspicion of burglary and have been released on police bail until Thursday, March 20, while the investigation continues.
