A Rydens Enterprise School student will see her artwork displayed at the Saatchi Gallery as part of a schools exhibition.

The untitled painting by Kanisha Thorne, 15, was one of 20 pieces shortlisted for the exhibition from more than 16,000 entries from 33 countries.

Kanisha’s painting, created using a watering can, could win her Hersham school £10,000 for the art department if she is chosen as the overall winner, along with an extra £2,000 for her to spent on art and computer equipment.

Along with the first prize, two runner-up prizes of £5,000 each will be awarded to the second and third placed schools, with £1,000 to each of the winning pupils.

The judges for this year’s prize include author and illustrator Laura Dockrill, artist Patrick Brill, better known as his pseudonym Bob and Roberta Smith, and Rebecca Wilson, Saatchi online director.

Bob and Roberta Smith said: “Young people’s art is so appealing because it is all about the cry of the artist.

“As artists develop art can become about the language of art, but in many of the works in this show it's as if you can hear some of the strong voices of the art of the future.”

The Saatchi Gallery and Deutsche Bank Art Prize for Schools is one of the largest international competitions open to primary schools, secondary schools and sixth forms to submit their artwork.

The competition aims to support and encourage budding young artists by providing them with a platform to showcase their work and give them the confidence to consider a career in the arts.

The exhibition of the shortlisted students’ artwork takes place at the gallery in King’s Road, London, from February 27 to March 5.
