The Landfill Liason committee run by Viridor comprising local residents, Councils, and the Environment Agency of which I'm a member hasn't met since many members walked out in protest about the Beddington Lane Incinerator.
Following recent heavy rains which have created sink holes in Sutton there are concerns about whether there are leaks of methane from the landfill.
It's possible cracks have opened up in the protective earth layers.
There are reports of a worsening of air quality in Hackbridge and damage to measuring equipment.
Sutton Council are believed to be checking the methane escape.
The Landfill land is unstable and is expected to subside by over 15 feet within the next few years not necessarily in a uniform way which may expose the contents.
Heavy rain may have speeded the process.
It will be hard to find methane leaks which will need to be blocked with more earth or uprooted to reprocess the contents.
With this ever present danger it is not the time to add to our problems with an Incinerator.
Roy E. Bennett; Hackbridge
