A 16-year-old boy caught on camera putting his life at risk to dangle from a 50m crane has promised police he will not perform a similar stunt again.

On Sunday, February 16, footage was published on YouTube which revealed two teenagers and a man climbing up a giant crane on a building site between Shotfield and Holmwood Gardens, Wallington.

Their death-defying ascent appears to have been done without any safety equipment and was slammed by the police as "dangerous and stupid".

Police have now identified the three, aged 16, 17 and 28, who featured in the film and referred to themselves as ‘freerunners’.

Sutton police visited the 16-year-old in his Cheam home yesterday and the youngster has entered into an Acceptable Behaviour Contract (ABC).

Sutton Guardian:

The crane is thought to be 50m high

The ABC is a voluntary agreement between him, the police and the council to "not to act in a manner that causes or is likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress to one or more persons not in the same household".

A breach of the contract could result in an application being made to Magistrates Court for an Anti-Social Behaviour Order (ASBO).

The 17- year-old, who also lives in Sutton, and a 28-year-old, who is from outside the borough, are also being visited by the police.

The parents of both teenagers are being made aware of their death-defying stunt.

Meanwhile police are continuing to investigate whether any offences have taken place including criminal damage, disorderly behaviour and breach of the peace.

Robert Loveday, construction director for McCarthy and Stone, that are building a retirement development on the site, said: “We are committed to ensuring our live sites remain secure at all times in order to protect the safety and health of the local community and are appalled by the recklessness of those involved in this incident.

"We are taking this breach very seriously and are actively investigating the matter with the both the HSE and the police in order to ensure such irresponsible acts are dealt with accordingly.

"In the meanwhile, a complete review of our site security will be undertaken and additional CCTV and night security implemented.”

Sutton Council has no health and safety enforcement role on construction sites but is taking the matter seriously and has referred the incident to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

A spokesman for the HSE said they were going to visit the site this morning and would be making enquiries to satisfy themselves that the site perimeter meets acceptable standards for keeping the public out.

So this little tearaway "promised" police that he would not do it again. Yes, right, neither I nor most right minded people believe that he will keep his word. What he probably meant was that he won't be caught on camera again. I just hope that when he, or one of his brainless mates, comes crashing down from on high, no one else is hurt, or worse.
